Our tailored curriculums for beginning, intermediate and advanced guitar students offer a wide range of education for all age groups. Below is a basic outline that will summarize some of the techniques used to teach guitar at Progressive Music Center.
For students that can not read standard notation our teachers begin simple reading exercises using books such as the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1. The reading portion of our beginners curriculum incorporates note recognition, time signatures, note values, eye hand coordination and more.
Guitar students will also learn ear training by using their favorite songs from CD and recreating the songs on the guitar by ear. Students will also learn to recognize pitch and tone, which will branch into chord theory. Each student will learn the basic open chord forms and power chords. As students advance they will learn bar chords, Jazz chords and voice leading. This will be demonstrated by using chord progressions (chord progressions are chords put in a musical sequence which makes learning chords a lot more fun).
With single string improv. the student learns all the notes on the fretboard with a multitude of exercises. All Major and Minor scales, Pentatonic scales, Blues scales, and Modes are covered. The more advanced students learn improvisation which gives them the understanding to play lead guitar over chord progressions plus phrasing with melodic voice leading.
